College Application Procedures

While applications may be submitted at different times, the following procedure must be followed:

  1. All applications should be printed,
neat and legible. If you are submitting
an essay or a personal statement include your name and social security number.

  2. If you are applying on-line, make sure to check your work before submitting any information. Print out the counselor verification form if the school has one. Remember your log-on and password because you may need to go back to your application at a later date.

  3. College applications must be completed in their entirety and signed by the student and often a parent. Incomplete applications are usually returned.

  4. Please check published deadlines very carefully.

  5. Verify that the envelope is properly addressed to the Admissions Office at the college. You must furnish the postage. Be sure to include all supplementary forms required.

  6. A check or money order, payable to the college, in the amount of the application fee is required.

  7. The above procedure also applies to any scholarship applications.

  8. If a college requires ACT or SAT scores, they appear on your transcript. Some schools want them sent directly from ACT to them. If you have not registered to send them when you signed for the ACT test, you will have to send an Additional Score Report. These are available in the Guidance Office.

  9. Many applications also require a School Report or Counselor recommendation form. Please notify the counselor with sufficient time.

  10. Some schools also require a preliminary financial aid form. Include it but be aware that this form does not substitute for the FAFSA to be submitted after January 1.

  11. Many schools also ask for letters of recommendation. Sometimes the institution supplies ready-to-fill-in forms and sometimes they do not. It’s important to give your recommenders plenty of time to write your recommendation--at least two weeks. Additionally provide your recommenders with a brief personal information fact sheet about you. This helps recommenders know more about you and enables them to craft well-developed letter of recommendation. When asking for a recommendation, include a plain envelope with the following written or typed on the front: "Recommendation for (your name) at (college name)."
