Middle Level 2006-2007 Summer Reading Program

At Incarnate Word Academy Middle Level we feel that reading is essential to the education of our students. We also feel that parents should take an interest in what their children read. Therefore, we are providing a list of books from which the students and parents must choose together. The books vary in degree of difficulty and subject matter and each student must read enough books to total at least 12 points. Students select book titles from the Accelerated Reader List, as long as the point value meets the minimum criteria listed below:

  • Students going to Grade 6: Each book must be worth at least 4 AR points.
  • Students going to Grade 7: Each book must be worth at least 5 AR points.
  • Students going to Grade 8: Each book must be worth at least 6 AR points.

The Accelerated Reader List includes the point value for each book. This list is available to be viewed by title, author, or reading level. Students are encouraged to read books worth more points than the minimum listed above. However, books that have a point value less than those listed above will not be used toward the 12 total points required from summer reading. Tests for the readings will be taken during the first two weeks of the new school year. Each test must receive a passing grade before the student receives credit for the reading. (NOTE: During each nine-week grading period of the school year, each student must read enough AR books to total at least 25 points. Excessive points carry over to the next grading period.)

FOR INCOMING 8TH GRADERS ONLY:
Incoming eighth graders must also read one history-related book from the following list:

  • Johnny Tremain - Esther Forbes (13 points)
  • Rifles for Waite - Harold Keith (14 points)
  • The Witch of Blackbird Pond - Elizabeth Speare (9 points)
