INCARNATE WORD ACADEMY SCHOOL PROFILE Incarnate Word Academy is located in the City of Corpus Christi, Texas, with a population of 277,454. The result of the last census reflected a population of 54 percent Hispanic, 39 percent Anglo, and 7 percent other. The IWA school population is comprised of 43 percent Hispanic, 44 percent Anglo and 13 percent other. Also, Incarnate Word Academy consists of students of many different faiths. The primary industries in the south Texas coastal bend area are oil, gas, and tourism. The city has the sixth largest port in the United States and is located just twenty miles from Ingleside Naval Base, one of the largest in the United States. Incarnate Word Academy is a private co-educational Catholic School with a total population of 235 students. It was founded in 1871 and is a highly respected institution throughout Texas. Incarnate Word Academy is accredited by The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and by the Texas Catholic Conference Education Department. IWA is a member of the National Catholic Education Association. The school is committed to high academic standards, and 95 percent of the student body is on the college preparatory plan. Feedback from Texas university admission personnel substantiates the fact that Incarnate Word Academy does not have inflated grades. Within its curriculum, Incarnate Word Academy offers three foreign languages and eleven Advanced Placement courses. IWA also offers two dual credit courses, which are English 1301 and English 1302. Pre-AP and AP courses carry a ten-point weight for ranking purposes only. The Jeanne De Matel Laureate Diploma is the highest recognized diploma in the school. One must have completed three years of the same language, a combination of eight Pre-AP and AP classes, be named a commended scholar or above by the National Merit Program, and also pass two AP exams. The student must pass three AP exams if the National Merit Program does not name the student a Commended Scholar or above. Incarnate Word Academy test scores are well above the state and national averages. This past school year, IWA's ACT average was 22.9, compared to the state average of 20.2 and the national average of 20.9. The school's SAT average was 1075, compared to the state average of 992, and the national average of 1026. Incarnate Word Academy offers students a variety of extra-curricular opportunities. IWA competes through the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools in academics, art, athletics, and music. For the last five years the Ocean Bowl Team has reached Nationals and four of the five years they ranked in the top eight schools in the United States. This past year, the team finished fourth in the United States. The team has also won the prestigious Congeniality Award. Incarnate Word Academy operates on the Honor System. Thus, there are no locks on the student lockers.
