| Campus Excited about Pope Francis' Visit to U.S. Students participated in various classroom activities about Pope Francis during his visit to the U.S. from September 22-27, 2015. Throughout the week, middle and high school level students watched live stream video of Pope Francis’ visit. Mrs. Margie Lohmeier’s upper Montessori class learned about the Devotional Prayer of Mary: the Undoer of Knots, which Pope Francis absolutely loves. Sr. Helga Leija’s class worked on booklets about the life of Pope Francis. In addition, Sr. Agueda Oviedo’s eighth grade religious studies class helped elementary level students in Sr. Elizabeth Close’s class create puppets to celebrate the Pope's arrival. | Local Prosthetist Visits Middle Level Robotics Class Middle Level students in Mr. Howard Ludlow’s robotics class learned that the use of robotics is beneficial in the field of prosthetics. Scott Vicknair, a local prosthetist at Corpus Christi Prosthetics, visited with robotics classes on October 1, 2015 to discuss the use of robotics in prosthetic hands and its increasing use in other prosthetics. | Lady Angels Earn First Place at the Islander Splash Meet The high school level Lady Angels earned first place in the 1A-3A division at the Islander Splash Cross Country Meet. | CMSE Diocesan Course Required for Fall Fun Night Volunteers Parents who are interested in volunteering for Fall Fun Night or any other campus activities, clubs, or organizations must submit an IWA Volunteer Application. This application includes a Criminal Background Authorization form and Criminal Background Check Validation form. In addition, volunteers are required to enroll in a CMSE (Creating and Maintaining a Safe Environment) Diocesan Course. Classes are available through various parishes and occasionally at IWA. There will be a class offered at IWA on October 19, 2015 from 12:15-1:15 p.m. in the IWA Elementary Level Library Media Resource Center’s computer lab. Visit our Volunteering webpage to learn more. |
| Campus Recognizes Bullying Prevention Awareness Week and Unity Day in October Incarnate Word Academy is uniting with the rest of the nation to encourage others to take an active role in the bullying prevention movement. The entire campus will recognize October 19-23, 2015 as Bullying Prevention Awareness Week. In an effort to put a stop to bullying, students are invited to wear orange on Unity Day, October 21, 2015. |
| Parents Enjoy Breakfast with Children at Book Fair Elementary level students enjoyed having breakfast with their parents as part of the school's Scholastic Book Fair. The week-long event featured books and gift items for children and adults of all ages. | Middle Level Lady Angel Volleyball Teams are on Fire The middle level Lady Angels are having a great season. The seventh and eighth grade red teams are currently undefeated with 4-0 records. The seventh grade red team also earned first place at the IWA Middle Level and Annapolis Christian Academy volleyball tournaments. Both red teams will have their final games of the season on October 13, 2015 at St. James Episcopal School at 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. The seventh and eighth grade white teams finished their season already, but both teams did well. | High School Level Students Study Sir Issac Newton's Law of Motion High school level students in Ms. Villanueva’s pre-AP physics class presented projects on September 29, 2015. | Fall Fun Night Provides Entertainment for Families The elementary level's annual Fall Fun Night is right around the corner. All IWA families to invite family and friends to this fun event on Friday, October 23, 2015. There will be a rock-climbing wall, inflatables, petting zoo, face painting, pony rides, and much more. | Students Skype with Executive Director of Water for South Sudan Middle level students in Mrs. Marci Levings’ reading composition class had the opportunity to Skype on September 24, 2015 with Lynn Malooly, the executive director of Water for South Sudan. Recently, the IWA students finished reading a novel by Linda Sue Park titled “A Long Walk to Water,” a true story about two 11-year-olds who face hours of walking and hardship to find water and safety. In addition to the Skype session, the IWA sixth graders pledged to drink only water for two weeks and save the money that they would normally spend on sugary drinks to donate to the Water for South Sudan nonprofit organization. | High School Level Swimmers Begins Season with a Splash The high school level swim and dive team competed in their first meet of the season on October 3, 2015 at the Corpus Christi ISD Sprint Invitational. “The Angels started off the new swim season with some terrific swims,” IWA Coach Mic Nelson said. “For many, this was their first high school swim meet. | President's Circle Launches Annual Fund Appeal with Dinner The 2015-2016 President’s Circle co-chairs, Dr. Javier Alonso and Mrs. Michelle Bauer, hosted a kick-off dinner at their home on September 24, 2015. Guests enjoyed food and refreshments and were introduced to Incarnate Word Academy’s new President and CEO, Sammie H. Grunwald. Ms. Grunwald gave a report on dollars raised and educational enhancements made possible through last year’s successful campaign. The 2014-2015 President’s Circle accounted for 24% of total donors to the Annual Fund Appeal and contributed 65% of the total dollars received! Through annual commitments beginning at $1,000, The President’s Circle sets the standard for giving at Incarnate Word Academy. | Students Learn About Water Cycle and Conservation Two officials with the City of Corpus Christi Storm Water Division visited with middle level students on October 1, 2015 to talk about the water cycle and importance of conservation. The officials spoke to students about the city’s drinking water origin and factors that affect water quality, storm water, and water conservation. In addition, they demonstrated a few of the city’s water testing methods and provide a visual on storm water runoff. | Campus to Recognize Red Ribbon Week Faculty, staff, and students will kick off Red Ribbon week October 26-30, 2015 with an important message to raise awareness of illegal drugs and drug abuse. There will be several activities planned at each school level. |
| Elementary Level Announces Student Council Officers Several elementary level students ran for student council elections. President and vice president candidates presented their campaign speeches on September 30, 2015 to the student body in the IWA Chapel. Students voted on October 1, 2015 for their chosen candidates, and student council officers were announced on October 2, 2015 at the school’s monthly assembly.
