Spring Fine Arts Features Performances and Artwork

This year's Spring Fine Arts Festival will be held on May 5, 2015 at Del Mar College's Fine Arts Center in the Wolfe Recital Hall. The event, which begins at 6:30 p.m., will feature musical performances by elementary, middle, and high school level students. In addition, there will be a high school level theatre arts performance as well as art exhibits to view. Admission to this event is free to the public.



Band Wins State Sweepstakes for Fourth Year in a Row

The school band earned a superior rating in the large concert band's wind ensemble category at the TAPPS State Band Championship on April 23, 2016 in Temple. In addition, the school band won State Sweepstakes. The band has received the State Sweepstakes award four years in a row since 2013.

Elementary Level Celebrates Earth Day

In celebration of Earth Day, elementary level students learned how to respect the earth through various classroom activities.

Local Bar Association Recognizes Students

Two high school level students were recognized at the Corpus Christi Bar Association's luncheon on April 13, 2016. Sophomore Sofia Aguirre received second place and junior J.R. Ramos received third place in the best attorney category. Sofia earned a $2,300 scholarship and J.R. earned a $1,500 scholarship.



Middle Level Swim Team Finishes Season with a Splash

The middle level swim team competed in their last meet of the season on April 16, 2016 at Tuloso-Midway. The students faced teams from Alice, Flour Bluff, St. James, Texas Virtual Academy, and Tuloso-Midway. Overall, both the seventh grade boys' and girls' teams received third place. The eighth grade boys' team missed the top spot by less than 20 points. The boys' 100 free relay team earned first place and the boys' medley relay team received third place. The boys' 200 freestyle relay team received third place. “The middle school swim teams did an outstanding job this year,” IWA Swim Coach Myra Nelson said.

High School Level Students Place at State Art Competition

Sophomore Millicent Alvarado and junior Jessica Bang both received superior ratings at the state Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) competition on April 23, 2016 in San Antonio. Jessica received a superior rating of 4 in the drawing category and was honored with a medal. A superior rating of 4 is the highest rating possible at the VASE competition. Millicent received a superior rating of 4 in the sculpture category and received a Gold Seal award! The Gold Seal award is given to the top 150 works at the state event. In addition, Millicent received a $100 scholarship for her 3D sculpting skills at an on-site scholarship competition. Her sculpture is currently on the road to be shown at various museums and universities around the state.

Students Place in State Law Day Competition

Eighth grader Alison Duncan and junior Jessica Bang are two of the 18 statewide Law Day contest winners. Alison earned second place in the poster contest in her division. Jessica Bang earned first place in the photography contest and third place in the poster contest in her division.

Baseball Team is Second in District Standings

The varsity baseball team defeated St. John Paul II High School 3-2 on April 26, 2016. The team also defeated San Antonio Christian School 2-0 on April 22, 2016. The team lost to Holy Cross 2-6 on April 29, 2016. In district standings, the boys' team is ranked second with a 10-3 record. The baseball team's bi-district game will be May 5, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. at the National Little League Field. An opponent is to be determined.

Students Participate in Skype Session with Aquarium

Fourth and fifth grade students participated in a virtual tour of the Texas State Aquarium on April 21, 2016. Students learned about the various animals at the aquarium, local bays, and estuaries.

Lady Angels Softball Team Shines in District Play

The Lady Angels varsity softball team is in the top spot in district standings with a 14-0 record. The team recently defeated Holy Cross High School 11-6, St. John Paul II High School 4-3, and San Antonio Christian School 33-1.

Band and Choir Perform at Mount Carmel Home

The middle and high school level band and choir performed at Mount Carmel Home, an assisted living center, on April 29, 2016. After the performances, students mingled with the residents.

Guests Invited to Speak About Religions of the World

Rabbi Ilan Emanuel of the Congregation Beth Israel visited April 27-29, 2016 to discuss the basic elements of the Jewish faith. High school level students are currently learning about the different religions around the world. Imam Mohamed El Ghobashy of the Islamic Society of South Texas and Superior General Elect Sister Annette Wagner of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament will visit in the coming weeks.

Students Celebrate 'Esperanza Rising' with Fiesta

Elementary Level-Montessori students in Mrs. Lohmeier’s and Sister Anne Brigid’s class recently read “Esperanza Rising,” a novel about a young girl who overcomes her difficult circumstances. As in the book, the students enjoyed a fiesta on April 22, 2016.



Honor Roll Students and Parents Treated to Breakfast

High school level students, who were named to the third quarter honor roll, and their families were treated to breakfast on April 19, 2016. The event was organized by the school’s National Honor Society.



Students Learn about the Heart

Middle level students in Mrs. Hill’s seventh grade science class are learning about the anatomy of the heart. Recently, students were able to identify the different parts of the heart during a dissection lab.

School Provides Students with College Planning Resources

College representatives from Texas A&M University’s Mays Business School and the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising recently met with students to discuss their majors, campus life, and more. As the process of applying to and selecting a college becomes more and more competitive and complex, IWA is committed to providing students and families with college-planning resources. To help prepare students for college, IWA schedules several college visits throughout the school year; offers financial aid workshops; and provides the comprehensive college planning and readiness online resource, Naviance.

CMSE Class Required for All IWA Volunteers

Parents who are interested in volunteering with campus activities, clubs, or organizations must submit an IWA Volunteer Application and enroll in a CMSE (Creating and Maintaining a Safe Environment) Diocesan Course. Classes are available through various parishes and occasionally at IWA. The certification is for three years. The next class at IWA will be on May 4, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. in Room 107 in the high school level building. For more information, visit our volunteering webpage.



French National Honor Society Inducts New Members

High school level students were recently inducted into the French National Honor Society. Alumnus Charles McCrann '14 was the guest speaker at the induction ceremony.
