We have so much to be thankful for as we finish the school year and prepare for the next one. | School Holds Retirement Ceremony for Physics Teacher Ray Perrone has taught physics at IWA for 30 years. Students and his colleagues agree that he makes learning physics a fun adventure in the classroom. This past November, Mr. Perrone was one of the many Angel faculty and staff members to be recognized for his years of service in Catholic education at the Diocesan Catholic Educators' Conference (DCEC). Mr. Perrone, who will retire at the end of the school year, will be honored with a reception on June 2, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in the Angel Avenue Student Center. In appreciation for shaping the minds of students at IWA, there will be a tree dedication ceremony following the reception. Students, former students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni are all welcome to attend.

| Camps Provide Summer Fun We will be offering summer camps in a wide variety of sports and activities. IWA's summer camps allow students to practice positive attitudes, leadership skills, pride of accomplishment, loyalty to others, and self-discipline. Summer camps also encourage cooperation and teamwork, while allowing students to have a ton of fun! Register today!

| Seniors Receive Excellence Awards for their Study of French Dana Alonso-Bauer and Helena Daubourg recently received the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) Excellence in French Award. To qualify for the award, a student must be enrolled in a French class, demonstrate excellence in the study of French, demonstrate a commitment to the study of French in extracurricular activities such as French Club, be a non-native French speaker, and be nominated by an AATF member.

| Eighth Grader Competes in Scripps National Spelling Bee Claire Thomas successfully completed the preliminary rounds of the 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee which consisted of a written test and two oral rounds. In Rounds Two and Three, Claire correctly spelled the words “millegrain” and “magistracy.” At the end of Round Three, only 45 out of 171 spellers advanced to compete in the finals. This was Claire's second time competing at the national level and she did an outstanding job representing the Coastal Bend and IWA at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. | Students Help Mothers in Need in Honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary Middle Level students, faculty, and staff celebrated Mass on May 19, 2016 in the school's James R. Dougherty, Jr. Center. As May is the month of the Blessed Virgin Mary, students participated in the Crowning of Mary at the beginning of Mass. In lieu of flowers, students chose to bring baby items such as baby powder, bottles, wipes, and bibs to donate to the Corpus Christi Hope House, a nonprofit organization that provides shelter and assistance for mothers and their children in need. | Debate Skills Shine in Upper Montessori Classroom Elementary Level-Montessori students in Mrs. Lohmeier's and Sr. Anne Brigid's classroom used their debate skills during a class mock trial on May 13, 2016. Students participated in all parts of the mock trial, including the prosecution team, jury, witnesses, defense team, and expert witnesses. The class thanked Attorney Ruben Lerma Jr. and Attorney Joe Flores for their guidance in this incredible experience.

| Spring Musical Production Features Broadway Hits The High School Level's theatre arts department presented “Musical Theatre History Revue” on May 19, 2016 in the school's Mother Patricia Gunning Gymnasium. Over 70 cast members provided an evening of entertainment with scenes from: “West Side Story,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Lion King,” “Wicked,” “Legally Blonde,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Mamma Mia!” and more. Following Mass, a reception was held in the Angel Avenue Student Center. Coach Wenzel will be retiring his role as an IWA coach at the end of the school year. | IWA Exceeds Goal from Paradise Island Gala We are pleased to announce that we raised $280,000 in net proceeds at the 2016 Paradise Island Gala — exceeding our goal by $30,000! We are extremely grateful for the support of our sponsors, donors, underwriters, and volunteers. Your generosity and support helped make this possible! The unrestricted funds raised at Gala, combined with the dollars raised through our Annual Fund, will directly support our Educational Initiatives Fund. This fund bridges the gap between tuition revenues and the actual cost of education, and benefits every student and faculty member at IWA.

| Congressman Visits with Students High School Level students had an opportunity to meet U.S. Congressman Blake Farenthold on May 20, 2016. Farenthold, who is an alumnus of the High School Level, spoke to seniors and congratulated them as their graduation date approaches. In addition, Farenthold presented two U.S. flags to seniors Edward Hicks Layton and William Charles Layton. The flags, which flew over the U.S. Capitol, were donated by Farenthold as a 2016 Paradise Island Gala auction item. This auction item was purchased by the gala's advisory chair Gloria Hicks to give as graduation gifts to her twin grandsons, known as Hicks and Wills.
