| | IWA CELEBRATES THE LIFE OF DR. HECTOR P. GARCIA | In honor of Dr. Hector P. Garcia Day and in celebration of his life, the Elementary Level hosted a recognition Mass on September 21st in the IWA Chapel. The campus has a close personal relationship with the family of Dr. Hector P. Garcia. All of Dr. Garcia's daughters are graduates of IWA, and Dr. Garcia was the personal physician of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament for many years. After Mass, Dr. Hector P. Garcia's daughter Cecilia Garcia-Akers, president of the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation and a member of the IWA School Board of Directors, presented IWA with a check of $5,000 to be used as tuition assistance for students to attend the Angel campus.

| | ANGELS HAVE FUN AT FALL RETREAT | Eighth grade students enjoyed some time away from the classroom at their fall retreat on September 16th at Camp Zephyr. They participated in several activities with their classmates and learned about building community among each other.

| | STUDENTS REFLECT ON PRESENCE OF GOD | Sophomores participated in a spiritual retreat on September 15th at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church. Upperclassmen volunteered as team leaders to help with group activities. This event is a time for students to come together outside of the regular school setting to explore, experience, and reflect on the presence of God in their lives and to share this experience with one another.

| | ELEMENTARY LEVEL SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR BEGINS THIS WEEK | Join us this week at the Elementary Level Scholastic Book Fair in the school's Library Media Resource Center. The book fair will be open Monday through Thursday at 7:40 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Friday from 7:40 a.m. to Noon. There will be a Muffins with Mom event on September 27th and a Doughnuts with Dad event on September 29th from 7:30-8:00 a.m. A percentage of purchases will benefit the Elementary Level Library Media Resource Center.

| | ANGELS ENJOY OLYMPIC-THEMED PEP RALLY | Middle and High School Level students, faculty, and staff enjoyed the first pep rally of the school year on September 21st. The Olympic-themed pep rally began with the singing of the National Anthem by junior Madison Leeves. The Angel Cheerleaders then performed a dance routine before they introduced the High School Level volleyball and cross country teams. | | ELEMENTARY LEVEL SWIM LESSONS ARE BACK!
| Elementary Level students are invited to attend swim lessons with Coach Myra "Mic" Nelson on Wednesdays from 5:00-6:00 p.m. at the Del Mar College Natatorium. Swim lessons have already begun. At each swim lesson, girls must wear one-piece swimsuits. Boys and girls are encouraged to bring goggles. Swim caps will be given to each swimmer. | | ANGELS AND PARENTS INVITED TO COLLEGE FAIR
| The High School Level will hold a College Fair on October 10th in the Mother Patricia Gunning Gymnasium. IWA freshmen and sophomores will attend the College Fair from 9:00-10:00 a.m. and juniors and seniors from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Parents are also encouraged to attend during that time. The College Fair will include over 40 colleges and universities such as Baylor, Duke, Harvard, Louisiana State, Texas A&M, University of Texas, University of the Incarnate Word, Yale, and more. | | ELEMENTARY STUDENT COUNCIL CAMPAIGNS BEGIN | Several students are campaigning for Elementary Level student council by placing posters around campus. Class representatives will present speeches in their individual classrooms on September 27th and 28th. After Mass on September 28th, president and vice president candidates will present campaign speeches in the IWA Chapel. Voting will take place after lunch on September 29th. | |

| | CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS PLACE AT ISLANDER SPLASH | The High School Level cross country teams competed in the Islander Splash race on September 17th at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Both the boys' and the girls' teams earned second place and each had four runners place in the top 20. The teams will travel to Round Rock this week to compete in the McNeil Cross Country Invitational on October 1st.

| | STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH | Students in Mrs. Risi Mortola's class learned about Hispanic Heritage Month during their Spanish class. The students also made a poster with all the flags of the Spanish-speaking countries. Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated September 15th through October 15th. | |

| | STUDENTS CELEBRATE THE FEAST OF THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS | Mrs. Sonia Hall's class celebrated the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14th with a lesson and activities. The lesson began a reading of "The Tale of the Three Trees," a story about three trees that each dream about being made into something different. However, they learn that God has better plans for them. Following story time, the class made colorful tissue paper crosses and enjoyed cross-shaped cookies.
