STUDENTS HEAD OUTDOORS

TO CONDUCT EXPERIMENT

Seventh grade students from Mrs. Betty Hill's fifth period science class gathered behind the James R. Dougherty, Jr. Center for a very real lesson in "survival of the fittest." The students were pitted into six groups with varying instruments including forks, knives, spoons, and other utensils with the goal being to pick up as many scattered beans out of a patch of grass. The project's origin stems from the idea that creatures, in this case finches, adapt to their specific environment in order to hunt for food. Students were able to determine which beaks adapted best for survival.
