"THIS IS WHAT HE WOULD WANT"

Honoring the life of renowned Mexican-American civil rights leader Dr. Hector P. Garcia, Elementary Level students celebrated a memorial Mass on Wednesday, September 20th in the IWA Chapel.

Present during the Mass was Cecilia Garcia-Akers, President and Chairman of the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation, her husband Jimmy Akers, and several other family members. Garcia-Akers' recently published the book, "The Inspiring Life of Texan Hector P. Garcia," which chronicles the life of her father, his struggle being a Latino in the U.S. Army, as well as his devotion toward bringing better health care and education to veterans and students for over 50 years.

During the end of Mass, Garcia-Akers gifted a $2,000 check on behalf of the memorial foundation to help facilitate tuition costs for displaced families who are attending IWA in wake of Hurricane Harvey.

"Those families needed a new home, and this is their new home" she said. "This is what [my father] would want. He would want us helping them."

MIDDLE LEVEL DONATES

GIFTS TO SALVATION ARMY

Inspired to help displaced Coastal Bend families affected by Hurricane Harvey, eighth grade students in Mrs. DeLeon's Life Skills class decided to start the Angel Buddies Collection Drive with the hopes of giving families who lost everything a sense of joy by supplying them with toys, games, and gifts to give to their children. Students throughout the Middle Level took the opportunity as a chance to perform an act of kindness and began filling boxes up with stuffed animals, coloring books, card games, and other forms of entertainment for children. Angels presented their donations to members of the Salvation Army of the Coastal Bend on September 21st.

THINKING BEFORE YOU CLICK

"When I click, am I going to be awful or awesome?" was the question posed to Middle and High School Level students by guest speaker Chris McKenna during the Protect Young Eyes presentation on September 21st in the Mother Patricia Gunning Gymnasium. In preparation of National Bullying Prevention Month, students learned about the importance of the digital imprint they leave behind as well as the actions and words they choose to use online.

BALLING WITH BOTS

LeBron, eat your heart out. Seventh graders in Mr. Ludlow's robotics class put their STEM abilities to the test by slamming, jamming, and programming robots to shoot hoops during a basketball shootout activity. Throughout the school year, students taking the elective learn how to maneuver robots through increasingly complex environments and learn how to adequately manipulate objects within a robot's path. Robotics classes at IWA allow students to perform programming computations while teaching the industrial and practical purposes robotics serve in our everyday life.
