October 31, 2017 | ANGEL eNEWS BULLYING ENDS WITH US, BULLYING ENDS WITH ME In celebration of Bullying Prevention Month, IWA celebrated several campus wide events during the week of October 16th in a national effort to put an end to bullying for good. The IWA community wore orange on October 18th in recognition of National Unity Day, sending a message to "Make it Orange and Make it End." Throughout the week, IWA hosted guest speakers and class activities in an effort to remind students that bullying can have long lasting physical and emotional ramifications on an individual. In addition, Students were given orange anti-bullying bandanas during National Unity Day to show their solidarity and support for National Bullying Prevention Month. The week also included classroom discussions, projects, posters, classroom prayers, and orange ribbons and posters displayed across the campus. ANGELS SAY NO TO DRUGS Elementary, Middle, and High School Level students had several guest speakers visit during Red Ribbon Week to speak about the dangers of using and abusing drugs and alcohol. In addition, students participated in different themed dress-up days to show their support throughout the week of October 23rd. Students in Mr. Ludlow's robotics class tested their robot's strength, as well as their programming prowess, as they attempted to knock their opponent's robot out of a miniature sumo ring in a bracket-style tournament. View Photos: Middle Level Robotics Sumo Activity Angels in the News: South Texas Catholic SIX SENIORS RECOGNIZED AS COMMENDED SCHOLARS High School Level administrators have announced seniors Mary Ann Fergie, Joelle Francois, Ashley Montgomery, Nicole Morrison, Wilson Strain, and Robert Walsh have been named as Commended Scholars in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. Congratulations scholars! BACK-TO-BACK SWEEPS FOR VARSITY VOLLEYBALL TEAM Elementary Level 4th and 5th grade volleyball teams came out to cheer on the High School Level varsity volleyball team during their last district game of the season on Friday, October 20th. After a roll-call of the Elementary volleyball teams, the Little Angels gave their varsity counterparts goodie bags in celebration of their awesome season! The Lady Angels would go on to sweep St. John Paul II cleanly 3-0, putting them in second place with a district record of 4-2! The Lady Angels had a chance to warm up before area playoffs and faced W.B. Ray High School on Friday, October 27th where they would go on to also sweep the Lady Texans 3-0! View Photos: Varsity Volleyball vs. St. John Paul II LITTLE ANGELS LEARN TO C.A.R.E A bright pink firetruck operated by CCFD firefighter Jose Gonzalez rolled into the James R. Dougherty Jr., Center parking lot on October 30th. Representing Corpus Christi Fire Fighters C.A.R.E. (Cancer Awareness Relief Effort), Gonzalez gave Elementary Level students a tour of the vehicle and spoke to Angels about cancer awareness. View Photos: CCFD Pink Truck Angels in the News: KIII-TV—Channel 3 STUDENTS PRAY LIVING ROSARY As the month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary, students prayed in and out of the classroom. The Middle Level created a Living Rosary in the James R. Dougherty Jr., Center on October 18th. The Elementary Level prayed their Living Rosary on October 30th in the IWA Chapel. In addition, High School Level students in Sr. Judith Marie's religious studies classes prayed the rosary and participated in several fun Rosary activities including a game of Rosary Bingo. As individuals, Rianne Olivares placed third (and won the award for Crowd Favorite Costume!) and Christopher placed fourth. CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS PLACE AT TAPPS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP The High School Level girls' cross country team placed fourth out of 23 schools in the 2-mile event during the TAPPS State Championship on October 30th in Waco. The boys' cross country team placed tenth out of 28 in the 5,000 meter event. What a great way to end an amazing season. Congratulations Angels! ELEMENTARY STUDENTS Elementary Level - Montessori students attended a field trip to Texas A&M University—Corpus Christi on October 18th to hear guest speaker Dr. James McLurkin, an assistant engineering professor at Rice University, during TAMU-CC's Distinguished Speaker Series. McLurkin's core research is developing distributed algorithms for multi-robot systems, the software for large bodies of autonomous robots. NOTES FOR NEIGHBORS Inspired by his parents and ministers at his local perish, junior Justin Douglas amassed hundreds of hand-written cards of encouragement to be distributed to displaced students in Port Aransas about to head back to school. Called "Notes for Neighbors," Justin began the campaign as a way for IWA High School Level students to offer their moral support to families affected by Hurricane Harvey. View Photos: Notes for Neighbors SENIORS NAMED NATIONAL HISPANIC SCHOLARS High School Level administrators have announced seniors Sofia Aguirre and Mary Ann Fergie have been named in the 2018 National Hispanic Scholars Program. Congratulations Mary Ann and Sofia! MIDDLE LEVEL VOLLEYBALL TEAM PLACES 2ND IN TOURNEY The Middle Level White volleyball team earned second place at the Baker Middle School volleyball tournament on Saturday, October 21st! The team won their first and second games against Haas Middle School and Driscoll Middle School to earn a spot in the championship game against Baker Middle School. The Lady Angels played their hearts out! HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL The High School Level hosted a blood drive on October 26th. Valuing the worth of every living person and all walks of life, IWA welcomes the Coastal Bend Blood Center several times throughout the year to team up with students and the IWA community to provide the gift of life to those most in need. View Photos: High School Level Blood Drive GOLF TEAM TEES OFF The High School Level golf team recently placed fifth overall with a score of 380 during a tournament played in Victoria on October 20th. Junior Carly Teichman tied for fourth place in the girls division shooting 92 while senior Justin Cavazos tied for tenth place in the boys division with a score of 91. SENIOR VISITS MOSCOW DURING OLYMPIC SHOOTING COMPETITION Senior Joyce Hunsaker had the opportunity to travel to Moscow, Russia as part of the National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships which was held from August 30th through September 11th. Joyce, who has only been shooting the game of bunker trap for a little over two years, qualified for the competition after winning a gold medal at a junior tournament in San Antonio and winning a bronze medal in a tournament held in Colorado Springs. During her performance in Moscow, Among 60 countries represented during the Moscow tournament, Joyce earned 11th place individually. She also placed third as a member of the women's trap junior team, bringing home a bronze medal. YOUNG FILMMAKERS WIN BIG For the second year in a row, seniors Justin Cavazos and Jack Harrison competed in the 2017 Corpus Christi 7-Day Film Project. The annual competition gives filmmakers the challenge of completing a short film from start to finish within a 7-day period. Justin and Jack received the "Young Filmmakers Award" for their short-film "COPS: Interns." The duo, who won the "Young Filmmakers Award" in 2016 as well, also was nominated for "Best Screenplay."
