We invite you to come find out what S.T.E.M. is all about at our first ever campus-wide S.T.E.M. Festival on Thursday, February 22nd at 6:00 p.m. in the Mother Patricia Gunning Gymnasium. The festival will showcase over 40 student-led exhibits focused on the subjects of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics with students from first grade through twelfth grade. Middle Level art exhibits, a photo booth and a concession stand will be available for festivalgoers to enjoy. Integrated into the curriculum beginning at the Elementary Level, S.T.E.M. classes are designed to teach students a diverse range of critical thinking and reasoning skills. These types of lessons enhance student collaboration, creativity, and communication skills while also preparing students for the future.

ANGELS BEGIN THEIR LENTEN JOURNEY ON ASH WEDNESDAY Students, faculty, and staff at each school level celebrated the beginning of their Lenten journeys during their respective Ash Wednesday Masses on February 14th. Not since 1945 has Valentine's Day coincided with Ash Wednesday. It was a perfect time to celebrate the love of Christ. ANGELS ADVANCE TO STATE ACADEMIC COMPETITION After competing at the district meet, six of our Elementary Level students will be advancing to the Private Schools Interscholastic Association (PSIA) State Academic Meet on April 28th. This is the first time IWA's Elementary Level has competed in the annual competition! The meet will be held at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. CELEBRATING AMAZING ANGELS Middle Level students, faculty, and staff hosted a special celebration for eighth-grader Vanessa Flores and sixth-grader Wilson Vanexan on February 12th. Both students competed in the National Amazing Shake Competition at the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, Georgia from February 9th to the 11th. Vanessa placed 46th out of 133 students from across the nation and also received a distinctive honorable mention from the judges. Wilson would go on to place 3rd in the entire nation! THE ROAD TO WACO BEGINS After defeating St. John Paul II High School on February 9th, the girls' varsity basketball team will begin their journey to advance to State with a TAPPS Area Playoff game against Houston Lutheran South Academy at 5:30 p.m. on February 20th in the school's Mother Patricia Gunning Gymnasium. LITTLE ANGELS BOOGIE DURING VALENTINE'S DAY DANCE Students at the Elementary Level enjoyed a Valentine's Day Dance on Friday, February 9th. Little Angels danced their hearts out with the help of a live DJ, took selfies with friends in a photo booth, and were awarded bouquets of heart balloons for the best dance moves! ANGELS START BASEBALL SEASON WITH A BANG There's no better day than Opening Day! The varsity baseball team proved just that in their Season Opener on February 19th against Miller High School. The Angels captured the "W" against the Bucs going over 17-4. The team will be competing in a tournament hosted by Banquete High School from February 23rd to the 25th.
MONTESSORI STUDENTS ENJOY VALENTINE'S DAY PARTY Elementary Level - Montessori students in Ms. Acosta's class celebrated Valentine's Day with loads of fun activities on February 13th. Little Angels traced their hands to make Valentines for their families, painted "watercolor" cookies, made glittering slime, and got to take home their Valentine Mailboxes filled to the brim with treats and notes from their classmates. PROBLEM SOLVING WITH ROBOTS Two robotics teams, comprised of seventh-graders David Matl and Andrew Beauchamp and eighth-graders Johnathan Shull and Michael Fergie, competed in the First Lego League Alamo East Qualifying Competition on February 17th. Angels did an amazing job during the competition receiving the awards for best performing robot, best project, and best robot design. SWIMMERS SLASH TIMES AT TAPPS STATE MEET Out of the nearly 60 TAPPS Division II teams who competed at the State Swim Championships on February 8th, the varsity boys and girls swim teams did an outstanding job with swim times being slashed all across the board. Held at the Mansfield Natatorium in Mansfield, the boys' team placed ninth overall while the girls' team took 13th place. Individually, high point scorers for the boys and girls teams were freshman Jonah Lugo and sophomore Kelsi Wood. ANGELS CROON AND SWOON DURING TALENT SHOW High School Level students, faculty, and staff showed off their wonderful gifts during a Talent Show on February 16th in the Mother Patricia Gunning Gymnasium. Performances included a piano medley, a song from a theater play, and several singers who played guitar or piano. Congratulations to our winner, junior Lydia Jimenez, who sang a beautiful rendition of Sam Smith's "Not in That Way." View Photos: High School Level Talent Show
SENIOR WINS SCHOLARSHIP AT SAN ANTONIO LIVESTOCK SHOW Senior Joyce Hunsaker had a phenomenal showing at the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo. Competing in the livestock show's Junior Shootout, Joyce placed fifth in the Modified Trap event and second in Super Sporting event. Competing against nearly 700 other contestants, she successfully completed two different sporting clay courses before advancing to the final competition. Joyce was the winning ladies contestant and was awarded a $10,000 scholarship from the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo! Congratulations Joyce!
PREPARING FOR THEIR FUTURES A representative from the New York Film Academy met with High School Level students to answer any questions they had about a career in filmmaking on February 13th. The representative also presented thespians with the "Do's and Don'ts of College Auditioning" in the school's Library Media Resource Center. Throughout the school year, IWA is committed to providing students and families with college-planning resources such as visits with college admission representatives, college application nights, financial aid workshops, and other activities.
