"COCO" AUTHOR VISITS IWA Elementary and Middle Level students welcomed author and Corpus Christi native Diana Lopez, who recently penned the novelization of the hit Disney-Pixar film "Coco," to our campus on May 3rd. During her visit, Angels asked the author an array of questions including how she became an author, what her favorite series of books are, what her favorite Corpus Christi restaurant is, and if there was a possibility IWA may be a featured location in her next novel. After the Q&A session, Lopez signed copies of her novels and took pictures with little Angels. BLESSING OF THE ICONS Middle Level eighth graders completed the final step in the writing of their Icons as they were blessed by Fr. Matthew during Mass on May 4th in the IWA Chapel. Throughout their semester-long spiritual journey, students worked diligently on their Icons which represent the many forms of prayer including humility, trust, faithfulness, and perseverance. HISTORY COMES ALIVE AT LIVING WAX MUSEUM History came alive as fifth graders were transformed into living exhibits during the Elementary Level's Living Wax Museum on May 8th in the James R. Dougherty, Jr. Center. As little Angels and parents toured the museum, students presented biographies on several iconic individuals in history such as the Wright Brothers, Jackie and John Kennedy, Stephen F. EIGHTH GRADERS ENJOY CAMPING TRIP IN BRENHAM Middle Level eighth graders ventured to Brenham on the school's annual outdoor camping trip at the Outdoor School's Camp-for-All from May 7th-9th. SOCCER AND SERVICE Senior Hamilton Lee signed a National Letter of Intent to play for Virginia Military Institute's Division I NCAA soccer program on May 1st. A lead scorer for the High School Level boys' soccer team, Hamilton has consistently maintained an excellent academic record while also proving himself to be a dominant force on the field. Hamilton chose VMI as a way to play NCAA soccer while also preparing for officer training in the United States Armed Forces. STUDENTS GATHER FOR FINAL PEP RALLY There was much to celebrate during the final pep rally of the year which was hosted in the Mother Patricia Gunning Gymnasium on May 2nd. The pep rally kicked off with the High School Level cheerleaders recognizing their senior members and team captains with each receiving a bouquet of roses. The cheerleaders would then go on to recognize Elementary and Middle Level PSIA Academic Meet competitors, TAPPS Academic team members, as well as several High School Level sports teams. ELEMENTARY LEVEL CELEBRATES DURING FINAL FRIDAY ASSEMBLY Elementary Level students, parents, and faculty attended a First Friday Assembly on May 4th in the James R. Dougherty, Jr. Center. During the assembly, students were surprised with an appearance from H-E-Buddy who was in attendance to present first grader Noah De La Garza with the H-E-B Buddy League Student Advocate Award. Noah, a shining example of good behavior, friendship, and inclusion, received the anti-bullying award after being nominated by his teacher, Mrs. Sandra Ledesma. The school also recognized birthdays in May, Accelerated Reader student achievements, as well as those who competed in this year's Private School Interscholastic Association Academic Meet. ANGELS SING THE HITS DURING MUSICAL HISTORY REVUE Middle and High School Level thespians put on a fantastic performance during this year's Musical Theatre History Revue on May 1st in the James R. Dougherty, Jr. Center. Angels wowed with renditions of Broadway classics from Mama Mia, Grease, Annie, The Greatest Showman, Hercules, Aladdin, and much more. VARSITY BASEBALL KNOCKS OUT ANOTHER AMAZING SEASON The varsity baseball team's season came to an end during game two of a best-of-three series with the very strong Houston Lutheran South Academy on May 3rd at Flour Bluff High School's Hornet Stadium. Securing an undefeated district season of 6-0, our hats are off to seniors Evangelino Pangilinan, Jeremiah Ramirez, Eric Rodriguez, and Robert Walsh who all played their final game as Angels. MIDDLE LEVEL CELEBRATES THE VIRGIN MARY DURING MASS In celebration of our beloved Virgin Mary, Middle Level students, faculty, and staff celebrated Mass during the school's Crowning of Mary in the James R. Dougherty, Jr. Center. on May 11th. In lieu of flowers, students brought baby items such as bottles, wipes, diapers, and bibs to donate to the Corpus Christi Hope House, a nonprofit organization that provides shelter and assistance for mothers and their children in need. RELIGIOUS STUDIES CLASSES DISPLAY FAITH DURING FINALS Freshmen students in Sr. Judith Marie's Religious Studies classes presented their beautifully constructed Faith Shields to classmates on May 8th. Their final project for the year, Angels used the shields to express their personality and spirituality, explained which fruits and gifts of the Holy Spirit they live out the most, and said how they contribute to IWA. THE CLASS OF 2023 The Middle Level hosted a special student luncheon for the eighth grade class to congratulate them as they finish up their final days as middle schoolers on May 10th in the James R. Dougherty, Jr. Center. The Class of 2023 was welcomed to a delicious spread of Italian cuisine, a bar with a variety of ice cream flavors and toppings, and a slideshow presentation featuring students next to their baby pictures to show just how far they have come. SENIOR RECEIVES $5,000 MISS BUC DAYS SCHOLARSHIP Congratulations to senior Ashley Elliott who made first runner-up in this year's Miss Buc Days Queen Scholarship Program and was awarded a $5,000 scholarship! Throughout the six month program, Ashley has shown her prowess as a young leader within her community by participating in several civil and business development opportunities. We are so proud of her. MIDDLE LEVEL STUDENTS ENJOY ROOT BEER FLOAT SCIENCE LAB Sixth graders in Mrs. Hill's science class pondered the age old question, "ice cream then root beer, or vice versa?" during their Crazy Root Beer Science Lab on May 10th. Ultimately, Angels learned a valuable lesson about solids, liquids, and gasses: they are delicious! GAME, SET, MATCH! Congratulations to our varsity tennis team members who made it all the way to the quarterfinals of this year's TAPPS Championships. Sophomore Sofia Alexander and senior Joyce Hunsaker represented the girls in the doubles event and freshman Pranai Reddy represented the boys in singles competition. A special recognition goes to Joyce who also made this year's TAPPS Academic All-State team. Way to go, Angels!
MIDDLE LEVEL INDUCTS NEW NJHS MEMBERS A total of 16 sixth and seventh graders were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society on May 11th during a ceremony in the school's James R. Dougherty, Jr. Center. With several students, family members, and staff in attendance, new and current members received certificates honoring their accomplishments after all five candles representing the NJHS core values had been lit. STUDENTS MAKE MEMORIES DURING MIDDLE LEVEL PICNIC Before the school year comes to an end, Middle Level students enjoyed an afternoon full of fun, music, and games during the annual student picnic on May 11th under the IWA Pavilion. With the picnic serving as the last official day for houses to earn points, Angels participated in several games in a last ditch effort to get ahead. Congratulations to the winning house, Altruismo!
