Sixth Grader Advances to Scripps National Spelling Bee

Claire Thomas now advances to the Scripps National Spelling Bee after she placed first at the South Texas Regional Spelling Bee on February 22, 2014 at the Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz International Center. The Scripps National Spelling Bee will be held in Washington, D.C. from May 25-31, 2014. Claire was greeted at school with cake and flowers the Monday after placing first in the regional spelling bee.

High School Level Academics Team Places First at District

The high school level academic team received first place on February 22, 2014 at the TAPPS 4A District III Academic Competition. Students placed in ready writing, science, prose interpretation, persuasive speaking, spelling, current events, number sense, calculator, advanced mathematics, solo acting, literary criticism, social studies, Spanish, duet acting, poetry interpretation, original oratory, and mathematics.

Elementary Level Chess Team Places at State Championship

Congratulations to the Elementary Level Chess Team for competing and placing in the 2014 Texas Scholastic Chess Championship in Houston! The Elementary Novice Division team, consisting of Kieran Loftin, Diego Roberts, Rebeka Roberts and Suzette Torres, received 5th place. Kieran Loftin, an individual winner, received 17th place. Due to his high rating, the Primary Champs Division representative was Joaquin Loftin. The Elementary Junior Varsity Division team, consisting of Ryan Fernandez, Andy Kretsinger, Anna Kretsinger, and Cyan Sepulveda, received 6th place. Individual winners in the Elementary JV Division were Ryan Fernandez, who received 27th place; Ryan Fernandez who received 11th place; and Cyan Sepulveda who received 30th place.


IWA Is Set to Exceed Goal from Paradise Island Benefit Gala

This year’s Paradise Island Benefit Gala was held on March 1, 2014 at the American Bank Center’s Henry Garrett Ballroom. The event included dinner, dancing, live entertainment, children’s art auction, silent and live auctions, and a car raffle of a 2014 Nissan Versa Note. All proceeds from the gala benefit the Educational Initiatives Fund, which has a direct, positive impact on Incarnate Word Academy Elementary, Middle, and High School Level students, faculty, and educational programs. This year's preliminary figures indicate that goals from the Gala will be surpassed. Final totals will be released soon.

Lady Angels Soar High to Regional Finals

The Varsity Girls’ Basketball Team had a great season finishing 32-7. The Lady Angels won 62-51 in the TAPPS 4A Area Playoff game over Houston Lutheran North and fell short by one point 55-56 in the TAPPS Regional Final game to Houston Lutheran South. Congratulations to the Lady Angels on a great basketball season!

Middle Level Students Place at Regional Science Fair

Middle level students placed in several categories at the Valero and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Regional Science Fair on February 21, 2014, which was held at the American Bank Center. These students now qualify to compete in the State Science and Engineering Fair from March 20-22 in San Antonio.

Three Art Students Headed to State VASE Competition

Several high school level students competed in the Texas Art Education Association’s Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) Region 2 Competition on February 22, 2014. Jessica Bang, Katie Duncan, and Sam Lathrop placed and now qualify to compete in the State VASE Competition in College Station from April 4-5. 2014.


Living Wax Museum Brings History to Life

Ms. Moses transformed her upper level Montessori classroom into a wax museum on February 22, 2014. Several parents and students from other classrooms visited the wax museum to listen to biographies on key people in history such as George Washington, Nancy Hart, Paul Revere, and Alexander Graham Bell.

Students Earn Awards in Visionarios Youth Art Contest

Several Angels placed in the 2014 Visionarios Youth Art Contest, which is sponsored by the Art Museum of South Texas and Flint Hills Resources. The Visionarios Youth Art Contest is held every year at the Art Museum of South Texas and features artists from 1st to 12th grade from around the coastal bend. Students used various mediums including watercolor, oil pastels, and colored pencils.

High School Level Students Compete in State Swim and Dive Meets

The Varsity Swim and Dive Team ended its season with several Angels competing at state competitions. The Varsity Swim Team competed in the TAPPS State Division II Swim Meet in San Antonio on February 14, 2014. The swim team finished in 12th place at state. Two divers, Kaleb Pena and Hank Carrillo, represented IWA at the TAPPS State Division II Dive Meet in Mansfield on January 30, 2014. Before competing at state, Angelina Wolfe was named Athlete of the Central Region Swim Meet.

Montessori Family Night Highlights Student-Parent Educator Partnership

The campus hosted its annual Montessori Family Night on February 19, 2014 for families currently enrolled in the elementary level’s Montessori program. To support the IWA perspective for teaching the whole child, IWA strives to partner closely with parents in the education process. Events such as the Montessori Family Night help strengthen the student-parent-educator relationship by providing parents hands-on knowledge of their child’s school day.

Middle Level Students Place at PSIA District Meet

Middle level students participated in the Private Schools Interscholastic Association (PSIA) District Meet on February 15 at Our Lady of Victory School in Victoria. Six students placed at the meet. Students Collect Jeans for Homeless Youth

Freshman Sheridan Steen organized a jeans drive in partnership with Do Something.org’s Teens for Jeans campaign. Sheridan and her classmates collected hundreds of jeans, which were donated to homeless youth. The Teens for Jeans campaign is in partnership with Aéropostale and Fifth Harmony. The high school level students’ jeans drive is a perfect example of how IWA students recognize God’s blessings and commitment and sharing them with others in school, family, Church, and the community.

IWA Donates $3,000 to Triumph Over Kid Cancer Foundation

The high school level presented a check of $3,000 to the Triumph Over Kid Cancer Foundation on January 30, 2014. The money was raised by the high school level’s student council and solidarity fund. The check was presented to Mecklin Ragan, sister of the late James Ragan, a Corpus Christi native and founder of the Triumph Over Kid Cancer Foundation

Students Learn about the Anatomy of the Eye

Middle level students in Mrs. Hill’s sixth grade science class learned about the anatomy of the eye in February. The students were able to identify the different parts of the eye during a sheep’s eye dissection lab during class.

Our young Angels kicked off Valentine’s Day with several events such as arts and crafts, reading time with parent volunteers, and of course – special deliveries into students’ homemade mailboxes. One third grade student even brought a rose to every girl in his class.

High school level students participated in a dry ice lab on February 6, 2014 in Mr. Perrone’s AP Physics’ classroom. Students learned more about dry ice and its different uses, as well as safety precautions when handling it.
