Middle Level History Fair Winners Move on to State Competition

IWA Middle Level students will move on to the State History Fair after a regional win at the Coastal Bend Regional History Fair at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Sierra Kudlicki, Sarah Starlin, Fabi Casas and Breanna Barrera’s project: The Evolution of the Television was chosen as a State Qualifier in the Group Exhibit Category. These students and their projects are now Austin bound. The State History Fair is May 7 through 8, 2010 at the Bob Bullock Museum in Austin, Texas.

Middle level students competed in several categories: Historical Paper, Group and Individual Documentary, and Group and Individual Exhibit. IWA did well in several categories, and students were recognized for their projects and efforts.   Nicolas Rodriguez, Paul Flood and Mary Philips Hubert were chosen as state alternates in their categories. Congratulations to the winners and all participants. Click on the following link to learn more about the National History Day student fair program.

Elementary Students Usher in Lent with Mardi Gras Party

With a surprise guest appearance by the sun that brought a patch of beautiful weather, IWA Elementary Level students, parents, teachers, and even Principal Sr. Camelia celebrated the day before Lent was to commence with a Mardi Gras party.

Party revelers sported traditional Mardi Gras ball masks and beads and enjoyed a huge spread of traditional Fat Tuesday dishes along with good ol’ south Texas Tex-Mex favorites.

Students learned about the significance of Fat or Shrove Tuesday in respect to the Lenten season. “We learned about the colors of Mardi Gras,” says K4 student Samantha Stillman. “Gold is for strength, green is for grass [growth in faith] and purple is justice. And Mardi Gras is really fun.”
