Congratulations to Incarnate Word Academy High School senior Jordan Allison, named a 2010 recipient of the Prudential Spirit of Community Certificate of Excellence and a President’s Volunteer Service Award winner. Jordan was honored for her volunteer work with the Princess Project—a program that serves high school senior girls of the community by providing free prom dresses and accessories to those who could otherwise not afford them.
Presented annually by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the Prudential Spirit of Community honors young people nationwide for outstanding community service activities.
Jordan was among the top ten percent of all award applicants from Texas. As a local honoree, who performed 100 hours or more of community service, Jordan also received the prestigious President’s Volunteer Service Award.
The YMCA of the Coastal Bend nominated Jordan for the Spirit of Community award for her exemplary volunteer service. “The YMCA of the Coastal Bend operates the school-aged childcare program at [Jordan’s school] Incarnate Word Academy,” explains YMCA Program Director Christie Beauregard. “After hearing that Jordan Allison and the Junior League were helping girls make their prom dreams come true by operating Project Princess, Jordan’s name was submitted for Prudential Insurance Company Spirit of Community Award.”
The Incarnate Word Academy Princess Project committee has participated in the prom dress drive in the past several years. For the 2010 drive, “Jordan was essential this year [for IWA's participation] in this program,” says Ms. Beauregard. This the Princess Project committee offered over 800 dresses with all the accessories and finishing touches that a young girl would want for her prom.
“This project is a true example of what the mission of our school dictates,” Jordan explains, “which is that the power of goodness can be felt wherever you are and that it should be reflected in all that you do and say.”
Now in it fifteenth year, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is the United States' largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service.
“The recipients of these awards vividly demonstrate that young people across America are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their communities,” says John R. Strangfeld, chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial. “They truly deserve all of the praise and encouragement we can give them.”
