MEXICO MISSION PROGRAM
In 2003, one hundred years after the first Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament entered Mexico, Incarnate Word Academy joined the mission program sponsored by St. Joseph Academy in Brownsville, Texas. This initiative was taken in order to provide the opportunity for interested students to have a missionary experience. The goal of the program is to provide religious services, catechesis, and evangelization for residents of remote villages near Tula, Tamaulipas during Holy Week. Students are divided into teams and assigned to a specific village. In Mexico, they visit homes of families to get to know them and to invite them to classes and religious services. They also teach classes, interact with thenatives, play with the children, and lead communion services on days that a priest is not present for Mass.
IWA continued its participation with St. Joseph’s mission program until the 2006-07 academic year when it took over three of its own villages. This was a result of an increased number of student participants who desired to share the Gospel with the people of Mexico. The missionaries meet weekly for two hours to prepare themselves for their trip through prayer, study, faith formation, and faith sharing. They also participate in fundraising activities throughout the year and in a weekend discipleship retreat. As a result of this experience, student missionaries have a profound personal transformation and a better understanding of how the world really exists outside of the United States. Their witness of this experience proves to have a deep impact on the student body; which can be seen through the continual increase in participants. For more information about the IWA mission program, becoming an adult sponsor, or to make financial contributions, please contact Marc Ortiz, Director of Campus Ministry at ortizm@iwacc.org or (361) 883-0857 ext. 173. Checks may be made payable to Incarnate Word Academy and sent to: Marc Ortiz More than anything, please keep the program, the students, adult sponsors, and the Mexican natives in prayer. May the works of our Incarnate Word Academy students continue to take the Gospel of Jesus, the Incarnate Word, to the ends of the earth! Praised Be The Incarnate Word; Now and Forevermore! Amen! |
