Our Family
Incarnate Word Academy (IWA) serves approximately 1000 students representing 500 families. Three separately administered co-educational levels--Montessori/Elementary, Middle School, and High
School--share a fourteen-acre campus near Corpus Christi Bay .
Our students come from throughout the city, from surrounding south Texas areas, and from all segments of the population. The cultural diversity contributes a special richness to campus life. Approximately 40% of our students are Hispanic, 2% are Asian, 2% are African-American, and 66% are of varied ethnic origins. The student body is 75% Catholic but a wide spectrum of faiths are represented within our student body.
Diversity is also evident among the excellent faculty, who come from Corpus Christi and various parts of the United States. Forty-seven percent hold a master's degree. All are highly qualified and dedicated to their profession.
Faculty members bring a wealth of personal and professional experience to the school community. Teachers and staff at IWA are dedicated team players who embrace the mission of the school, believe that all students can be successful, and hold high expectations for them. The faculty provides a variety of learning environments for the students and gives specific and timely feedback on their progress. Cooperative and competitive strategies are used. Teachers at IWA express ownership for school improvement and participate in curriculum development. Involved in self renewal, they model and promote life-long learning. Believing in the power of the Spirit at work in the community, teachers nurture and promote the development of each student's individual strengths and talents.
Parents are a vital part of our community. As the primary educators of their children, they work with IWA as partners. Their involvement in campus life is encouraged through the Parents Club, special community celebrations, volunteer activities, fund raising events, and membership on the Advisory Board, Finance Committee, Long Range Planning Committee, and Building and Grounds Committee. Parents regularly attend parent-teacher conferences to discuss the progress and well-being of their children.
A strong and active Alumni Association, headed by the Alumni Council, has a membership of approximately 3,500. It enables the reuniting of past students, nurtures pride in the IWA heritage, and generates further support for the school.
Developing Christian community among our many members is on-going and fosters respect for the dignity of all people. Annual school activities, special Masses, and religious functions bring our family together for fun, work and worship.
