UPDATE: When action was suspended late Tuesday afternoon early in the third round of the 2019 National Spelling Bee, three Corpus Christi-area spellers remained alive in the national tournament.
Round 2 – Three of the four Corpus Christi spellers have advanced. Edmund Thomas correctly spelled excoriate. Isaac Elliott was correct on apothecary. And Maya Mollick correctly spelled pelisse.
Adrian Lawrence was eliminated late in the second round when he misspelled annus mirabilis. It is a Latin phrase that means “wonderful year,” “miraculous year” or “amazing year.”
The nation’s top spellers are in Fort Washington, Md., today for the 92nd Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The competition runs through Thursday.
It began yesterday with the preliminary tests.
A total of 567 competitors from across the country are vying for the title of National Spelling Bee Champ.
Four Coastal Bend students are taking part in the competition.
They are currently participating in the second round.
Among those from our area still spelling include:

- Adrian Lawrence, fifth grader, Blaschke-Sheldon Elementary School, Ingleside.
