Academic Counselor

My name is Sherilyn Calhoun and I am blessed to be your high school counselor at Incarnate Word Academy High School for the eighth year!

I am so honored to be working with this fabulous community of students, parents, administrators, and staff as we continue to navigate these unchartered waters. As we all faced the challenges in education last spring, I was constantly amazed by the level of dedication, compassion, and professionalism of the IWA teachers and their unending efforts to provide each student with a top-quality education! Committed to encouraging, supporting, and empowering our students to become their best selves, I am here to help ALL of our Angels by providing a comprehensive and developmental counseling program that supports their academic, personal/social, and career and college goals. My belief is that every student is a special and unique child of God and it is my goal to open their eyes to the options to help them choose the best fit for their future. Life is not one size fits all!

One of the many strengths of IWA is College Readiness and we are here to walk students through the process every step of the way. Through the use of the Naviance Program, students and parents have access to the best college and career planning tool on the market where they can research colleges, majors, career, scholarships, and watch over 7,000 videos on struggle, triumph, and self-discovery via Road Trip Nation……all at their fingertips!

A graduate of the University of Texas in Austin with a BS in Education, English, and History, I earned my Master’s Degree in School Counseling K-12 through Texas A&M-CC. My husband and I have three wonderful daughters and six fun and entertaining grandchildren. Our favorite times are when the family can all be together, especially for holidays, but that is a challenge with families living in Kodiak, Atlanta, and The Woodlands. My favorite pastimes are traveling, dinner with friends, and live theatre. A few little-known facts--I have ridden a camel in Morocco, taken a helicopter to the top of a glacier in New Zealand, and played the role of Mrs. Darling at the Harbor Playhouse.

I am excited to be starting on this new year’s journey together and look forward to seeing familiar faces and welcoming new ones!

Sincerely,

Sherilyn Calhoun

Our family’s favorite Bible verse:

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  Jeremiah 29:11
