Permanently Named Funds
The following permanent scholarships annually enrich the life at Incarnate Word Academy and support the
school in perpetuity, helping to build permanent funds to sustain IWA in the years to come. Donors are
encouraged to make additional contributions to current permanent scholarship funds in order to increase the fund and earnings amounts over time.
Sister Dorothy Anhaiser Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in honor of Sister Dorothy by her family and friends in recognition of her 60th anniversary as a Sister of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament. Sister Dorothy’s ministry has included serving as IWA teacher and cafeteria supervisor and Incarnate Word Sisters’ archivist.
Sister Noreen Begley Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Jonelle ’62 and Aloysia LeMaire ’71 in 2005 in honor of Sister Noreen, a long-time friend of the family.
Annette Deanne (Dee Dee) Berry Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2003 by Wilbur Dean and Mary Kuntscher Berry ‘56, in memory of their daughter who died in 1974 of cancer at the age of 3.
The Barrientes/Tehle Family Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Mona Barrientes Tehle '78 and David Tehle in memory of Mona's parents, Stella and Pete Barrientes, in gratitude for the Catholic education they provided to her at IWA, and in honor of the greater Barrientes Family's long association with and support of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament.
Wilbur Dean Berry Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Mary Kuntscher Berry '56 in memory of her husband.
Dr. Bob Bezdek Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated by Dr. Bezdek to recognize his belief in quality Catholic education. It was established as a permanent scholarship in 2013.
Henry and Anita Bezdek Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2002 by Dr. Robert R. Bezdek in honor of his parents.
Sarah Elizabeth Gough-Bordenet Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2019 by Bobby and Donna Gough in memory of their daughter.
Pat Megerle Booth ’49 and Gloria Spahn Boutte Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Pat and Gloria in 2016 in recognition of the blessings of their long-
standing friendship and in gratitude for the outstanding education they received at Incarnate Word Academy.
Bradley Sisters Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated by IWA parents in 2010 in honor of Sisters Christina ’48, Margaret Patrice and Marian Bradley ’56 who have been significant as teachers in the IWA Montessori program.
Brehony Sisters Scholarship
The Sister Catherine Brehony Scholarship was established in 2002. In 2005 it was renamed the Brehony Sisters Scholarship to include her siblings Sister Maria Elizabeth Brehony, Sister Colette Brehony, and Sister Rita Brehony. The Brehony Sisters have served in Catholic education for many years in the areas of teaching, administration and supervision.
Busker Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2009 by Mrs. Ann Busker Clarke ’70 in memory of her mother, Mary Busker, her aunt, Philomena Busker Walker ’42, and the deceased members of the Busker family. The Busker Memorial Scholarship was made permanent in 2013 through contributions of family and friends.
Josephine Maria Schonefeld Busker Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1999 by Philomena Busker Walker ’42 in memory of her mother.
Ezequiel Cisneros and Delfina Gonzalez Canales Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Dr. Carlos Canales, M.D. in 2009 in memory of his parents.
John C. Carter Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated by Shirley Carter in memory of her husband, John.
Sister Denise Cassidy, IWBS ‘57 Scholarship
After a long battle with cancer, Sister Denise Cassidy passed away on June 4, 2018. She was a former principal of IWA Elementary and Central Catholic schools. It was her wish to start a scholarship fund to help those in need get a Catholic education.
Reverend Monsignor Mark Chamberlin Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2018 by Nancy Fairchild Bridger, family members, and friends as a tribute to Reverend Msgr. Mark on the occasion of his 50th anniversary of priesthood and in recognition of his commitment to the Church and Catholic education.
Paul and Marie Chilen Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2005 by Mary M. Chilen Davis ’57 in memory of her parents.
General Marc Cisneros Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Incarnate Word Academy in 2017 as a tribute to General Cisneros’ 15 years of support of Catholic education through the John G. and Marie Stella Kenedy Memorial Foundation.
Sister Mary Concepta Clerkin Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2004 by Nan McGloin in honor of her longtime friend, Sister Concepta, a Sister of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament since 1931. One of IWA’s first Montessori teachers, Sister Concepta also taught in elementary schools in Brownsville, Rockport, Vattman, Port Isabel and Corpus Christi. She died in 2004, thirteen days after her 92nd birthday.
Sister Elizabeth Close ’64 Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Joe and Margot Coco in 2007 in honor of Sr. Elizabeth Close, Margot’s first grade teacher at Our Lady of Victory School in Beeville.
Shelby and Marie Cole Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated by Dr. Bill ’53, CCCA and Ellen Jane Tiblier-Carter ‘53 in honor of Shelby and Marie Cole who were mentors to many young men attending Corpus Christi College Academy. Shelby served as teacher and coach from 1958- 1970 at Corpus Christi College Academy.
T.L. Creamean Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2016 by Dr. Troy L. Creamean as a tribute to his father, T. L., and in memory of his son, Tyler Loren, who died at age 21, during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005.
Bishop Thomas J. Drury Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1983 by Bishop Drury.
Chester and Bertha Eiermann Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1991 as the Chester “Chet” Eiermann Scholarship by the IWA Booster Club in his honor. The scholarship was renamed to the Chester and Bertha Eiermann Scholarship after Bertha’s death in 2003.
Richard E. Eleazer Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the graduating Class of 2008. Mr. Eleazer was a Calculus teacher at Incarnate Word Academy for five years. Together with contributions made by family and friends, the Class of 2008 collected more than $10,000 in one month.
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Carl Elter and Maxwell and Patricia Brown Meyers ’51 Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2018 by Patricia Brown Meyers ’51 in memory of her uncle and aunt and her husband, Maxwell.
David Escobedo Scholarship
The David Escobedo Scholarship was established in David’s memory in 2014 by the Escobedo family: Angie, his wife; David ’00 and Daniel ’02, his sons; and Divina ’08, his daughter.
Sister Anna Marie Espinosa ’66 Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2013 in recognition of Sister’s contribution to the Incarnate Word mission as teacher and IWA President.
Mary Esther Espinosa ‘68 Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2014 in memory of Mary Esther’s 41 years of service to IWA as a math
teacher. She passed away in 2014.
Charles Miller and Charles Francis Fergerson Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1993 by Mary Maxine Fergerson Grubbs in memory of her husband, Charles Miller Fergerson, and son, Charles Francis Fergerson.
Dr. George and Ellen Flood Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2002 by John Flood and his wife, Patti, in honor of John’s parents.
Father David Odem Fritter Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1980 by the Fritter Estate in memory of Father David Odem Fritter, Sister Caroline Fritter’s brother, who was ordained a priest one month before his death in 1940.
Lidy Fritz Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Lidy, who died in 2010.
Dr. Hector P. and Wanda F. Garcia Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Cecilia Garcia Akers ‘70 and the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation in honor of her parents who both gave selflessly to IWA. “Dr. Hector,” was the founder of the American G.I. Forum, a civil rights activist, and personal physician to the Incarnate Word Sisters.
Sister William Francis Garcia Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in March 2010 by the Incarnate Word Academy community in honor of Sister William Francis’s 90th birthday.
Adolfo Garza Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2006 by the Middle Level Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). Through this scholarship, the PTO recognized the contributions Mr. Adolfo Garza made during his tenure as principal.
Alfonso M. and Juanita S. Gonzalez Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated by Grace Glenn ’62 and Anna Gonzalez-Sorensen ’57 in memory of their parents.
Robert M. “Bob” and Neva Lee Knight Gough ’44 Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2004 by Bobby Gough and his wife, Donna, and his sister, Pat Gough Cuthbertson ’74 in memory of their mother and in honor of their father. They were past parents and loyal supporters of IWA. Neva died in 2004 and Bob in 2006.
Reverend William Gough Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1983 by alumni and friends in memory of Father Gough who taught
English and Religion at IWA.
Mother M. Patricia Gunning Scholarship
This scholarship was established in her memory in 1991 by Incarnate Word Academy and supported by alumni and friends. Mother Patricia was an English and Latin teacher at the high school level.
“Dick” and Frances Bernsen Hatch Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2004 by Geraldine Hatch Paquette ‘50 in honor of her parents. Dick died in 1968 and Frances in 1985. Geraldine’s parents were married for 47 years.
Richard J. Hatch, Sr. Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Geraldine Hatch Paquette ’50 in memory of her brother.
Sister Camelia Herlihy ’54 Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2013 in recognition of Sister Camelia’s contribution to the Incarnate Word mission as Principal of the IWA Elementary.
Anyssa Nicole Hinojosa Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2010 by the Incarnate Word Academy Junior Class in memory of Anyssa who died as the result of a tragic accident.
Sister Xavier Holworthy Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2004 by Jeanette E. Flusche Mullenix ‘54. The daughter of an Episcopal priest, Sister Xavier converted to Catholicism and became an Incarnate Word Sister in 1910. She taught business courses at IWA. Sister Xavier died in 1974.
Charles D. Imbergamo Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2015 by the IWA School Board in gratitude for his outstanding
leadership and devoted service as IWA President and CEO.
Incarnate Word Sisters Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated by Incarnate Word Academy in 2014 to honor all Incarnate Word Sisters for their dedication and contribution to Catholic education and to the Church.
IWA/CCCA Academic Excellence Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2004 by Dr. Bill ’53, CCCA and Ellen Jane Tiblier-Carter ’53.
IWA School Board Directors Scholarship
Incarnate Word Academy established this scholarship in 2014 in recognition of the leadership and support of the School Board Directors.
Catherine “Tad” ’32 and Buck Kelly Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2009 by Margaret “Moggie” Dreyer ‘62, Larry Kelly, CCCA ‘65, Leroy Kelly, CCCA ‘53, Elizabeth “Toosie” Morgan ‘58, Gerry Thomson’s ’52 in memory of their parents. Buck died in 1989. Catherine died in 2009.
Dr. Kathleen E. Kennedy ‘63 Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1985 by Vann and Mary Kennedy in honor of their daughter who graduated from IWA in 1963. This scholarship was set up in gratitude for the splendid training given to their daughter by the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament from elementary through high school.
Kuntscher 50th Celebrants Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2010 by the Kuntscher Family in honor of the 50th Wedding
Anniversary and 50th Religious Consecration Jubilee Celebrants.
Kuntscher Sisters Scholarship
The Sister Michelle Marie Kuntscher ‘60 scholarship was initiated in 2013 in appreciation for Sister’s contribution to the Incarnate Word mission as teacher, IWA School Board Director, and Superior General of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament. In 2014 it became a permanent fund through an IWA gift on the occasion of the 140th Anniversary of the Sisters and the school. It was renamed the Kuntscher Sisters Scholarship to include siblings Sister Juliane Kuntscher ’55, Mary Kuntscher Berry ’56, Eileen Kuntscher Riedel, Jeannine Kuntcher Weisman ’59, and Judy Kuntscher Temple ’64.
Frank and Margaret Kuntscher Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1989 by Joe Charles and Geraldine Petru Kuntscher ’59 in memory of Joe’s parents. Members of the Kuntscher family continue to support this scholarship.
Joe and Geraldine Kuntscher and Family Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2016 by Joe and Geri Kuntscher as their commitment and witness to
the value of Catholic education.
Amy Laudadio ‘89 Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1989 by her parents, Jim and Peggy Laudadio, and family. Amy died during her senior year in 1989.
Luis R. Lopez Scholarship
This scholarship was established by three of our devoted alumnae, Jovita Lopez-Smith ’76, LuLu Lopez Storey ’77 and Linda Lopez-George ’78 in honor of their father, Don Luis.
Martin-Hamner Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2006 by Mary Meyer ’55 in honor of her father, Barney R. Martin; her mother, Rosemary Martin Hamner; and her step father, Norman E. Hamner.
Charles F. McCauley Scholarship
This scholarship was created by family members in memory of Charles McCauley.
McComb Family Memorial Scholarship
The McComb Family Memorial Scholarship was established in 2015 in memory of Andrew and Leighton McComb, IWA Montessori students, and their mother, Laura, who passed away in the Wimberley flooding.
Sister Philomena McCormack Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1994 by Incarnate Word Academy in her honor. Sister Philomena, a Sister of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament since 1931, taught at IWA, St. Theresa’s School and St. Patrick’s School, all in Corpus Christi. She also taught at IWA in Brownsville and at Christopher College in Corpus Christi. Sister Philomena died in 2004 at the age of 91.
Sister Kathleen McDonagh Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2006 by Ralph, CCCA, ’56 and Kay West, friends of Sister Kathleen. Sister Kathleen, a Sister of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament since 1947, has served as Councilor and Secretary General for the Congregation, and as teacher on the IWA campus and various elementary and secondary schools in the Corpus Christi and Brownsville Dioceses.
Joseph M. “Jody” Metz Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Joe Metz in memory of his son, Jody, who died in 2011. Shirley Paul Mireur Scholarship This scholarship was established in 1991 through the estate of Shirley Paul Mireur.

Mark Muckleroy Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated by George Anne Muckleroy ‘55 in 2006 in memory of her son, Mark.

This scholarship was established in 2009 by Joe and Patty Mueller, past parents and grandparents of IWA.
Helen Power Munro Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1982 by family members: Edmond and Bobbie Ford, Diana Hamilton, Jack and Grace Ford Powers ‘63, R. C. and Helen Ford Allen ‘62, O.D. and Patricia Edwards ‘62, and Herb and Di Morrison, in memory of their grandmother.
Agnes E. and Patrick W. Nicholas Scholarship
Established in 2018 by Mary Nicholas Morgan ’70 in memory of her parents.
Peter Nordby Scholarship
This scholarship was established by family and friends after Peter’s tragic death in 2002.
Sister Martha O’Gara ’51 Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2011 in honor of Sister Martha O’Gara’s commitment to Incarnate Word Academy and in Thanksgiving for her 60 years in the Lord’s service.
V.J. and Mary Lou Pesek Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2006 by Donald and Cecile Hendricks Pesek ’76 in memory of Donald’s mother, Mary Lou, and in honor of his father, V.J.
Jim and Betty Nemec Petru Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2005 by Joe and Geraldine Petru Kuntscher ’59 in honor of Geraldine’s parents.
Mary Ann Quinlan Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1989 by Mary Ann Quinlan, a friend of IWA and strong supporter of Catholic education.
Keri ‘95, Kacy ’89, and Rus ’93 Richards Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2006 by Cy and Dee Dee Richards in honor of their children.
Chris Riedel Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2006 by Woody and Eileen Kuntscher Riedel in memory of their son, Chris, who died in 1989 at age 28 as the result of a train accident.
Patrick (Pat) Rivers, CCCA ‘55 Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2009 by Mary C. Pennington ’50, Joe, CCCA ’50, Hank ’53 and Alex Rivers ’61 in memory of their brother.
Arthur and Lora Roach Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2004 by Evelyn Roach in memory of her parents.
Kathy and Michael Roach Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1994 by Arthur and Lora Roach in memory of their children. Kathy died at age 21 in a car accident. Michael died at age 50 of cancer in 1988.
Sister Mary Anne Roddy ’36 Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1983 by her sister, Henrietta Roddy Newbury ’44, and members of the IWA alumni. Sister Mary Anne lived bravely with cancer for many years and died in 1982.
Ramsey Rodriguez ’93 Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated by Mrs. Enriqueta Rodriguez in memory of her son, Ramsey, who died in 2010. An IWA graduate of 1993, Ramsey was an outstanding athlete in track and field. After earning his college degree, he taught eighth grade Language Arts at the IWA Middle Level.
Sister Judith Marie Saenz Scholarship in memory of Roy and MaryEmma Ward Nicholas and Eugenia Gamez Langston
This scholarship was created in 2017 by Sister’s Marie and Dennis Nicholas. The fund was established in recognition of Sister Judith Marie’s 50th anniversary as a Sister of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament and in memory of Dennis and Marie’s parents.
Frank and Mary Beth Snapka Schonhoeft ‘61 Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2007 by the Snapka Family in memory of Frank Schonhoeft, who died of cancer, and in honor of Mary Beth Snapka Schonhoeft ’61, his wife, who devotedly cared for him in his illness.
Mary Shead Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2004 through a bequest from the estate of Mary Catherine Shead.
Reverend Monsignor Roger Smith Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2023 by Nancy Fairchild in honor of Reverend Msgr. Roger Smith and in recognition of his many years of ministry to Catholic education. An outpouring of support from friends and parishioners helped this fund reach permanent status.
Alfred, CCCA ’65 and Lucille Hoelscher Snapka Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2012 by the Snapka family in recognition of faithful service to the Church and strong commitment to Catholic education.
Larry, CCCA ’63 and Carolyn Hoelscher Snapka Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2012 by the Snapka family in recognition of faithful service to the Church and strong commitment to Catholic education.
R. J. “Jake” and June Snapka Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2001 through the family estate in memory of R. J. “Jake”, who died of cancer in May 2000, and in honor of his wife, June, who cared for him during his illness. June died in March 2010.
Roman and Sophie Bezdek Snapka Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1993 through the family estate in honor of Roman and Sophie Bezdek Snapka. Roman served as maintenance supervisor at Incarnate Word Academy. Roman died in 1992 and Sophie in 2000.
Sister Martha Ann Snapka ’53 Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2004 by Incarnate Word Academy in honor of Sister Martha Ann who served as IWA president from 1988-2001.
Carmen Solis Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2013 by Lt. Col. Carmen Solis in memory of her aunt, Sister Maria Ana de Castro, a deceased member of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament.
Sara Solis Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2012 through the Sara Solis Educational Trust.
Marguerite Sours Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2004 by the Marguerite Sours Foundation in memory of Marguerite Sours.
Rhoda Walden Speed ’60 Scholarship
This scholarship was established in Rhoda’s memory in 2006 by Ernest Speed, Jr., Rhoda’s husband, and Edward Speed, her brother-in-law. She died in 1997 at age 55 of cancer.
St. Jude Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2018 by the Canterbury family in memory of Sam Canterbury
and in recognition of his strong support of Incarnate Word Academy and his great devotion to St. Jude.
Sandra Pope LeMaire Sykora ’66 Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated by Henry and Teri LeMaire in memory of Henry’s mother who died in
2011. Sandra graduated from IWA in ’66 and was part of a long family history with the school and the Sisters. Sandra was a strong and faithful supporter of the IWA mission.
Emil and Charlene Tagliabue ’50 Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 1996 by Thomas Tagliabue ’82 in memory of his father, Emil, and funded by family members until it reached permanent status. In 2002, the scholarship was renamed to the Emil and Charlene Tagliabue Scholarship to include the memory of his mother Charlene.
Scott and Josephine Temple Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2006 by Terry and Judy Kuntscher Temple ’64 in memory of his parents.
Agnes W. Tengler Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1992 by Msgr. Alvin J. Tengler in memory of his mother and in recognition of her strong commitment to Catholic education and the practice of Christian values.
Sister Agnes Marie Tengler ’43 Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1992 by Incarnate Word Academy in honor of Sister Agnes
Marie when she completed her second term as principal of IWA Secondary Level. A Sister of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament since 1944, Sister Agnes Marie had a long history of administration in both the congregation and the school.
Sister Brenda Thompson ’56 Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated by the IWA Alumni Council in 2009 in recognition of Sister Brenda’s devoted service as Alumni director. It became a permanent fund through an IWA gift in 2011 on the occasion of the 140th Anniversary of the Sisters and the school.
Dr. Priscilla Tiblier-Snodgrass Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated by Dr. Bill ’53, CCCA and Ellen Jane Tiblier-Carter ’53 in 1988 and established as a permanent scholarship in 2005 in honor of their daughter, Dr. Priscilla Ann Tiblier- Snodgrass, M.D.
Thomas B. and M. Delia Cortez Tucker Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2007 by Myra Tucker Bull ’74 in memory of her father, Tommy and in honor of her mother, Delia.
Casper Wenzel Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1999 by alumni, family and friends in honor of Casper Wenzel, IWA athletic director, coach and teacher.
Wally and Bernice Whitworth ’35 Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2009 by Jerry, CCCA ’68 and Diane Whitworth ’70 in honor of Jerry’s parents.
Paul and Beverly York Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1999 by Incarnate Word Academy in memory of Paul and in honor of his wife, Beverly.
Chester and Aneda Zablocki Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Chester and Aneda Zablocki in 2014.
Angelo L. Zanetti Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2016 in recognition of Angelo L. Zanetti’s dedication to the pursuit of education.
Cliff, CCCA ’46 and Joyce ’57 Zarsky Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the Cliff Zarsky Estate in memory of Cliff and in honor of his wife, Joyce. Cliff passed away in 2011.

This scholarship was initiated by Dr. and Mrs. Robert Bluntzer, Jr. in memory of their parents, Robert and Naomi Bluntzer and Anita and Jose Benigno Hernandez.
Connie and Luis Cadena Family Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2023 to celebrate Connie's three decades of service to IWA, to honor their children who are IWA graduates and to recognize their family's commitment to Catholic education.
Carl Alan Carter Scholarship
